Personal Statement:

My purpose in life is to serve, assist, and impact at-risk, forgotten, and emotionally disturbed children.  I will serve these children and their families through art, music, and literature in one-on-one and small group settings.  To prepare me for this mentoring role, I will receive a classical education in Liberal Arts and Culture, where I will primarily pursue literature and writing.

My ultimate goal in teaching is to change lives.  I plan to accomplish this not only through academics, but through my continued work with Special Olympic athletes.  As a certified Aquatics coach, I have been blessed to experience the many rewards of pouring myself into the lives of my swimmers.  As I have visibly made a difference in these young people, I have come to realize that the most important contribution I, or any other citizen, can make in society is to impact the lives of young people.  By touching their hearts and equipping them with life skills, I can fulfill the ancient adage of “teaching a man to fish, thus feeding him for a lifetime”, rather than just “feeding him for a day” with handouts and temporary fixes.  Teaching is the best way to make a lasting impact on society, and I plan to spend my life sharing with others my passion for learning.

What I'm looking for in a college:

Small class sizes, a low student/teacher ratio, and a commitment to tutorial style learning are some of the major factors that I look for in a college.  I want to attend a school which provides a learning environment that, above all, points me to Christ as the ultimate source of wisdom.  One of the ways this can be accomplished is by being closely connected with a church community that supports the student body and provides accountability.   I also highly value an education system that stresses the concept of thinking deeply and truly educating oneself, rather than inputting large amounts of information and then regurgitating it to achieve a grade.  I look for an emphasis on not only reading great works of classic literature, but thoroughly analyzing those works and applying them to modern living.  The small size of the school and the centrality of the church community will facilitate intimacy with teachers and fellow students.  I heartily agree with the viewpoint that higher education should not be vocational training, but rather training in how to teach oneself, thus preparing students for a lifetime of learning and personal growth.  This resonates deeply with one of my long-term goals, which is to be a small group, classical liberal arts tutor.  I want to train myself to think critically and deeply, a skill that will equip me to transfer those tools of learning to my future students.
